Ok, so this is a video of a friend of mine’s class performance of The Book of Mormon. He goes to Suncoast in Florida, and he’s trying to put a lot of attention to it because it’s caused a lot of problems for his school along with all the drama members.
They performed this for a teacher at his school not too long ago. She’s a tough drama director but she gets results. Earlier this year, they performed Romeo and Juliet and got to 60 minutes. Obama himself is even scheduling to come to their Shakespeare show next year. Anyway, this performance was the last project they did for her this year, and after they were done she took them backstage and told them she was blown away. She admitted that this had been the hardest year of her life and until now, she’d lost all hope in her teaching skills because nobody was learning or growing. Life was just too hard. But their show renewed her faith. It showed her everything they had learned this year and it made her feel “like she was sitting in the Eugene O Neil Theatre watching the show”.
They asked her if they could perform it for their friends, and get it filmed so they could put it online. She said yes. They set it up at lunch, got a nice crowd. They had 3 WARNINGS before the show started, at 3 different times, that the show has obscenities, vulgar phrases, and may offend some people. They warn the audience to leave if they’re uncomfortable.
They get through it, and think they did great, and then they get a call saying someone went straight to the principal, and reported what they said and did. Originally, they were going to write up all the kids involved and give them referrals. But the teacher stood up for them, and because of that, they got leverage to use against her and the drama department is being cut.
So they’re making petitions, and they want to make sure this video is seen and enjoyed by as many people as possible for the full message it conveys. Get as much attention on this as you can and SAVE THIS DRAMA DEPARTMENT, because it saved my friend. It got him friends, and gave him a passion that he can’t stand to see deprived from anyone else.
